VOW
Sinead Nolan
In the end I knelt.
Outside, the river quieted.
Steps slowed behind me.
I knelt before the Latin,
the ceiling in excelsis.
I’d only gone to see
the stained glass windows,
the gold painted on statues,
the cathedral all cool air and wood.
I would never be moved
in a church like this,
before a god like that.
A seagull at the dock,
huge and hungry,
hawked at me as I walked home.
I had not intended to kneel.
